How to be a watering hero
The most important thing to remember is to stay safe so do not step into the road or stand very close to the curb if your tree is a street tree. In particular be mindful that some vehicles can have large wing mirrors. Some tree guards have holes in them so you can fill the watering bags through the guards rather than going close to the road.
Most of our tree bags can hold up to 75 litres (or in some cases 100 litres) and they will release the water in them over approximately 3 – 5 hours. They do not need filling to the top but putting in a good amount will give the tree a good soak and encourage the roots to grow down.
A 10-litre watering can costs only 2p to fill from the tap and filling the whole watering bag, less than 10p. But, why not use water collected in water butts or old bath water. If you would like a Plymouth Tree People watering can then tick the box on the Watering Hero form and we will have one delivered.
Young street trees can’t have too much water! They need up to 50 litres of water a week and in order to help them establish we do use paid-for contractors to water our trees during hot and dry periods. But whatever you can give them, in addition to this, will help them thrive, rather than just survive.
